How shared ownership helped James stay close to his family
After a major life change, James Hunt’s priority was simple: stay close to his children.
A second chance at shared ownership
When James Hunt returned to shared ownership 10 years after his first purchase, it was a decision based on experience.
Following a separation, James needed a home near his two children who split their time between him and their mother. At 37, buying alone in Saffron Walden - one of Essex's most desirable and expensive towns - was a daunting prospect.
Through the scheme at Barley Green, James bought a 40% share of a three-bedroom semi-detached house, using a deposit of around £28,000.
"I'd bought with shared ownership before and it really worked for me," James says. "Buying on my own would have been difficult here, but shared ownership made it possible."
Benefits for James
- Greater affordability when buying alone.
- Ability to stay close to his children.
- Access to a larger, high-quality family home.
- A smooth and supportive buying process.
- Improved lifestyle and convenience.
Finding the right home in Barley Green

James viewed the property in June while it was still under construction and moved in by September.
He chose the solicitor and financial adviser recommended by the developer.
"They took care of everything and checked in regularly. Whenever I needed something, they were fantastic. It made the whole process really smooth."

Staying close to home
The location quickly felt right. Set on a quiet cul-de-sac close to work, shops and the town centre, the development offered the family-friendly environment James was looking for.
"The kids can ride their bikes outside and it feels really safe," he says.
Inside, the house provided something equally important - space for the future.
"Both children have their own bedrooms. Being able to give them that, on my own, means a lot."
For James, shared ownership has provided more than a home.
"It helped me take my first step onto the property ladder years ago," he says. "Now it's allowed me to buy a proper family home for my children, without having to compromise."
