"I was living with my parents in Southampton to save up for a deposit and the commute took up so much time and wasted a lot of money," says Katie.

"From Graylingwell Park it only takes me about 10 minutes to walk to work so it’s lovely to have more time to myself."

As Katie, who works at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester, is now much closer to her friends and work colleagues, it means she can see them more often rather than spending time on the train.

"Most of my friends are local so it’s a lot easier now for me to meet up with them after work," she says. "There’s a great selection of bars in Chichester that we go to, as well good shops and the cinema.

"It’s very easy to get into town from Graylingwell Park, usually I walk everywhere but the bus service is very efficient as well."

Through shared ownership, Katie purchased a 30 per cent share in her one-bedroom apartment at Graylingwell Park for £46,650 (full market value £155,500), putting down a £7,000 deposit. She currently pays £360 a month rent and £200 a month in mortgage repayments, which together is still less than the average rental fees in the area.

"I saw the apartment and thought it was perfect," says Katie. "I knew I wouldn’t be able to afford anything else like it; I loved how spacious the open plan layout was.

"I didn’t really understand shared ownership at all at first but the sales staff talked me through everything and answered all of my questions," she says. "Thanks to shared ownership I was able to move out of my parents’ home a lot quicker than I had planned and I’ve got my independence at last!"
